Today Ken was finally feeling well enough to get out birding, and we met at 7AM at the I-5 / HWY 512 Park and Ride to try to track down some local eBird rarities and fill out our state and Pierce County year lists. First stop was the American Lake Camp Murray Boat Launch where Read More…
A Walk at Wildwood
Today Kay and I took an afternoon walk at Wildwood Park, near home. It was a sunny day and nice to get outdoors. We spent only about a half hour, and the best birds of the day were a pair of Brown Creepers, heard initially by me, sighted quickly by Kay, and eventually seen well Read More…
Misses in King and Snohomish
I had really hoped for a lifer today. A Black-headed gull has been seen in Snohomish County on most visits for the last couple of weeks, but the last report was 2-16-16 (3 days ago). Still, I saw no negative reports either so decided to go hoping everyone interested already had the bird and no Read More…
Upper Santa Ana River
I chased the not-seen-in-a-few-days Tufted duck to the upper Santa Ana River today, in a short outing before getting ready for hosting guests at our place this afternoon. I learned that this river trail goes many miles along to river all the way to the beach! No Tufted duck found, but enjoyed a good walk, Read More…
San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and Upper Back Bay Newport
If yesterday was exploring a new area, today was a visit with old acquaintances. I started at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary at about 8:20. From Fullerton took the 91 to the 55 to just past John Wayne Airport, and got off at Jamboree. It was very birdy in the earlier morning, much less so Read More…
Fullerton Arboretum
This morning Kay and I took an hour walk and birding outing at the Fullerton Arboretum. Best finds of the day were Townsend’s warbler, Allen’s hummingbirds everywhere, and an incredibly bright Song sparrow that had us studying it for a few minutes. Lots of habitat variation and plantings so a great place nearby to visit. Read More…
San Jacinto Wildlife Area
Today Kay, Mary and Fay went to visit Tracy in LA and I gout up early to head east to Riverside County and the San Jacinto Wildlife Area. I beat any traffic and got there just before daylight. This gave me time to review my notes and see the first light of dawn over the Read More…
Santiago Oaks Canyon Hike with the Sisters
Kay, her sister Mary, and I went to Santiago Oaks Canyon for a hike today. Birding was a secondary purpose. We did the hike well, but re birding some notes to self: -Get there earlier. By about 9 AM when we started it was already hot and the birds were quiet. -Do the Santiago Creek Read More…
Mile Square Park and Huntington Beach
Today Kay and I birded Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. It seemed like a fairly birdy area on the way to Huntington Beach and had easy access from our place in Fullerton without fighting Highway traffic in the morning. It was pretty much as expected. The uncommon SoCal birds that have been seen there Read More…
Kelp Gull: Not Today
When I looked at the CA alert from eBird last night the Kelp Gull found just 20 minutes from our place in Fullerton, just off I-5 in Los Angeles County at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds, jumped off the alert at me. I told Kay and she just asked what time we had Read More…
