Two County Year Ticks

On the way to work today, filling in at our Bonney Lake Same Day Clinic, I stopped by the Sumner Lesser Goldfinch spot. This has been a perennial nemesis for me, and I’ve been by several times already. I hoped an early stop would be the difference, and I was able to ID at least 2 LEGOs calling their whiny note from the trees in the back of the field.  Not seen, but good enough for a county FOY tick.

At lunch today since I was already in Bonney Lake I drove north to the gravel pit past Buckley off Hwy 410 to see the Bank Swallow colony there.  It is usually a closed gate deserted pit, but today was abuzz with activity as an exscavator was working the pit and a steady stream of huge dump trucks were coming and going.  I was concerned the BANS might have been displaced, but after a couple of minutes at least 10 flew back to the colony nest holes.  Still it looks pretty tenuous, with gravel being hauled out quite nearby.  Anyone who wants to see these uncommon Pierce County birds should go now, not later.
