Today Ken and I met t 6 AM and headed south with hopes of finding the White-tailed Kite found yesterday at the South Lewis County Airport, and of seeing the lingering winter specialties of the SW corner. We got to the airport just at dawn, and fog was moderately thick. We drove all around Read More…

Black Phoebe (finally)
Today with an assist to Michael C. I finally found the Black Phoebe at the area across the road from the Gog. Not a lot else happening at the main area today, but it was nice to walk the area with Michael, and hear about his recent birding travels.
Ruston Way and ABC
Little birding today, but I did get a walk on Ruston Way this morning in a strong wind and very clear air. The Olympics were clear view, and if not for the white-caps it would have been a good time for a bay watch. As it was I brought my camera rather than binos, thinking Read More…
A Drive to the Snow Today
This midday I was able to get out birding, and since I needed to go to Puyallup anyway I kept going east to Ashford hoping for maybe a Pine grosbeak, N. Pygmy owl or Townsend’s solitaire. What I got was beautiful snowy scenery adn the dipper at the usual Elbe stop. One was singing under Read More…
Lakes Today
Today I had to go to Dupont to pick up some bookcases, and borrowed Kathy McG’s pickup, so on returning the truck I took a few minutes to check out what on Gravelly Lake. Turns out pretty much what is expected, but she has nice habitat in her back yard, big trees and plantings so Read More…
Sparrows
Today on the way home from work I managed to get out in the sunshine for a few minutes on 134th Ave near the old Van Lierop’s Farm to look for sparrow flocks and hopefully a FOY Pierce goldfinch. No luck on the goldfinch, but I did manage a nice look at lots of sparrows. Read More…
Another Marbled Bird
Yesterday I added Marbled godwit to my 2018 Pierce list, and today after several unsuccessful tries I got a single Marbled murrelet on the south side of the Dash Point pier. No Black scoter with the mixed flock of WWSC and SUSC though. Then, as it seems to happen, at Brown’s Point Lighthouse there were Read More…
McNeil Trail Lookout Pays Off
Today Will Brooks texted us to tell us he had a Marbled murrelet on the Pierce side of the delta, and I got Bruce to chase it with me immediately. This morning I had walked the Chamber’s Bay beach access without finding much new, but this afternoon was more rewarding. Immediately on getting to the Read More…
Ft Lewis Pariries and a Look from the Front Windows
This morning Bruce and I headed to E Pierce County to try for some of the winter specialties. We both needed N. shrike, W. bluebird, and I needed Wood duck and W. meadowlark for my Pierce year list. We started with a very quick peek at the runway area off JBLM but neither GYRF nor Read More…
Very Quiet at the Gog Today
About 10 AM I broke free for a quick stop at the 11th St Bridge gull spot where nothing unusual a all was happening. Then I spent an hour at Gog-li-hi-ti where the wind appeared to keep the birds down, and after birding the whole area I managed just a FOY YRWA for Pierce. The Read More…
