Today Kay and I went to the Irvine area of Orange County first to look for Lawrence’s goldfinch (again) at William R. Mason Regional Park. It is a nice park in the city, near UCI, with a good riparian stand running along University Rd, and near the end of about 2 hours Kay located a Black-and-white warbler doing its usual limb-creeping thing at the same time I found a Townsend’s warbler. We got nice looks at the B&W though no photo. I need to get much faster at getting onto birds in bushes with my camera. This was a California first species for me. No LAGO though.
Next we went just a couple of miles away by road, maybe 3/4 mile as the crow flies, to San Joaquin Wildlife Refuge where 4 Long-eared owls have been at a day-roost for a couple of weeks. We found the owl when we found the photographers. There was much-to-do as is usual about bothering the owls, though honestly this one seemed pretty comfortable with the whole celebrity thing.
This was also a first CA bird for me.
It was cooler overall today, maybe 70ish and a bit foggy this morning until about 10 AM.
We visited the UCI Art gallery, really a dud, with just one video about a person who had no short term memory after an experimental brain surgery for refractory epilepsy in the early 1950’s.
