When I looked at the CA alert from eBird last night the Kelp Gull found just 20 minutes from our place in Fullerton, just off I-5 in Los Angeles County at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds, jumped off the alert at me. I told Kay and she just asked what time we had to get up to go for it. I figured as it was not seen until midday there was no hurry, so we got there at 8:30 AM today. Even that was probably way too early as it apparently for the last 2 days has showed up at 10:30 one day and 10:40 the next day. Still we held a 5-hour stakeout and both the number of gulls and the number and quality of birders increased as the morning passed. Unfortunately the KEGU was not found among the influx of gulls. I did manage to get one new bird for my CA life list, Lesser yellowlegs, on the river behind the settling grounds, and had lots of time to study gulls. In decreasing order of prevalence the gulls found were CAGU, WEGU, RBGU, HEGU, GWGU, THGU and GWxHE gull hybirds. Lots of ducks, lots of Black-necked stilts, a fair number of LBDO and killdeer, and 40 species total for the day. I’ll stay tuned to e-Bird and race back if it is seen again.
