I’ve made quite a few visits to OC over the years to visit with Kay’s family, but have not been here in summer often. Yesterday we took a hike in the hills outside Laguna Beach, and except for some singing Wrentits, Common Yellowthroats, and House Finches it was really pretty quiet, though a hike at midday may not be best.
This morning, again a bit too late, 9-10 AM I went out to one of my favorite Fullerton areas, the Nora Kutchner Trail, beside a big Chevron natural gas area, where in winter Kay and I have had Lawrence’s goldfinch and always before Scaly-breasted munia. Today it was Mockingbird city. It seemed like there were never less than 4-5 singing NOMO at all times, and except for hearing a Canyon Wren and a California Thrasher singing it was pretty quiet there too. I think winter visiting birds are more interesting than nesting species here. Looking forward to a great visit though, and enjoying the sun.
