Today Kay and I slept in until about 7:30, then after a quick breakfast headed for the Everglades. We made really a quick morning of it stopping only at Long Pine Key (got distant looks at and heard several Pine Warblers) and Mahogany Hammock Trail where we got nice looks at Swallow-tailed Kites, but overall it was pretty quiet. From there we headed off towards the keys, with a few stops, by far the most successful at the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical Gardens where after a walk in and almost out again we completely lucked into great looks at a Mangrove Cuckoo.
I heard a squirrel that I wanted to be sure was not a Mangrove Cuckoo, so I played myself the cuckoo from Sibley’s app. Of course it was not the bird, but about 10 seconds later a Mangrove Cuckoo replied with its full song from pretty close range. Kay and I looked for a couple of minutes, no luck, so I played again. It flew to a treetop about 50 yards away, Kay saw it fly in, and we had great looks. I got some photos, but it was still a bit far for great pics, so I played again. It then flew right overhead and sat there looking around, and called again for about 10 minutes and even better photos. See the e-bird list for pics. We also found a pair of Cape May Warblers right over the parking lot.
