The Flood Brother’s Dairy is the #1 eBird hotspot in Kennebec County, ME. Kay and I visited there this morning after having breakfast at the Early Bird Restaurant in Oakland with Morgan. My Aunt Donna and Uncle Royce happened in just as we were leaving, so that was nice to see them also.
At the dairy there are 3 manure ponds, and the first one was devoid of shorebirds. The second though had 16 Pectoral sandpipers working the edge, close enough for binoculars ID, as we didn’t bring a scope this trip. We couldn’t access the third pond because heavy equipment was working nearby. A Sharp-shinned hawk worked the large flock of EUST and ROPI while we birded, and two RTHA soared overhead.
At the gravel pits across River Road a small mixed sparrow flock yielded 1 CHSP, 2 SOSP and 8 WTSP before we headed for home.
The rest of the weekend is expected to be getting ready for Morgan and Kendall’s wedding so little birding anticipated. The leaves remain beautiful even though likely a bit past their prime. The weather is killer, highs in the high 60’s, lows at night (on the porch) in the 40’s to cool air in the nose and toasty under 3 layers of down comforters. Bill and Carol call this a 3-puff night.
