Jaegers

Yesterday Kay and I took the 9:15 ferry from Pt. Defiance to Vaschon Island in hopes of something good on the short ferry ride across but it was nearly devoid of any birds in that part of the sound. We spent a couple of hours looking around the island, at Quartermaster harbor, Tramp Harbor and took a short rainy walk in a park, but not much happening re birds. We caught the 12:15 ferry back and while getting off the ferry Bruce texted that Peter had seen 2 jaegers while walking his dog on the beach at Pt. Defiance. We took the U-turn at the end of the ferry and headed for 5-mile Drive to the Gig Harbor lookout. There in high winds and rain I did find one Parasitic Jaeger just after Bruce arrived. We left shortly to make the movie we had planned, but Bruce saw a Brown Pelican and Heermann’s gull while we were in the movie. This led us back to try for these in waning light, and I did find 4 Parasitic Jaegers, but not the others.
Today I met Ken for a day of birding Kitsap, and again Jaegers were about. We had one Parasitic at a distance at Yukon Harbor, and another two at Manchester State Park. Best bird of the day though was a lingering Red Knot at Yukon Harbor.

Overall a good sunny day with low winds, but missed another Pelican and 4 Ancient Murrelets at Pt Defiance. Will try for those tomorrow.
