Today Kay and I got up early to go up to the Sun Mountain Lodge trails to try for Dusky Grouse, Nashville Warbler, and Dusky Flycatcher. We were 0-for-3 on these targets, but did manage to see my FOY WA Vesper sparrow as they were singing loudly from conspicuous perches early, and both of us thought we might have heard a single Dusky Grouse call. Kay heard a call she was fairly confident about that sounded to her very close, and I heard what I thought was a distant bird in a different area, but despite fairly long careful listening we could never get a second call, and neither of us heard the other’s bird. I was more surprised at not hearing any Nashville warblers in areas others had found them, as well as no Dusky Flycatchers though we spent fairly limited time looking as we wanted to get back to the hotel for naps before family activities with Jean and Brett the rest of the day. Lazuli buntings were singing everywhere, along with Western meadowlarks and Spotted towhees.
Later in the day at the River Run Inn where we spent much of the day enjoying the nice riverfront grounds, I did manage to hear a Nashville warbler singing while we were on a bike ride, as well as found a group of Pygmy nuthatches.
Tonight we stay at Marblemount so I hope to break free for a couple of hours in the morning to go back east on Hwy 20 to the County Line Ponds to try for a WA FOY American redstart and maybe Red-eyed vireo.
