Today Kay and I visited the very nice urban Houston Audubon Society’s Edith L. Sanctuary as a storm driven alternative to High Island. We fled the coast in the midst of the historic downpour yesterday, spent a comfortable night at our Priceline bargain of the day, the Westin, and got up this AM for a long shot chance at Swainson’s warbler here. It was another of the, “You should have been here yesterday” migration stops I seem to hit regularly. Apparently yesterday afternoon, just after the downpour stopped, the park was lively with warblers apparently driven down by the storm. They must have left in the night because the refuge was very quiet this morning. We saw exactly 4 individual warblers, fortunately 4 species too. N. Waterthrush, Kentucky, Hooded and Black-and-white. We did add two FOY ABA birds for me, Gray-cheeked thrush and Bronzed cowbird. From there on to San Antonio. Birding mostly done for a few days until we head out for Black-capped vireo and Golden-cheeked warbler in a few days.
