Listing Over Birding

Today listing took front and center as Jean agreed that we could leave Miami Beach early in order to leave time to visit an e-Bird hotspot near the airport called Ocean Bank.  We were both surprised when we got there and it was in fact a bank. A big urban bank building with underground parking, some modest landscaping, and a typical not-too-upscale urban neighborhood surrounding.  I spent a while cruising the neighborhood.  Got a laugh from Jean by playing a recording of two Common Myna’s from my iBird Pro app, and wondered if this nemesis bird would again elude me.  Then I turned and saw a likely candidate perched on the top of a traffic light.  Sure enough it was a Common Myna.  As I was getting a photo, surprise an apparent mate exited the end-opening of the light pole, where it looks like they have a nest.

Common Myna perched on the traffic signal. Note the hole in the light pole. This is where they are nesting.

We had plenty of time for a picnic dinner at a nearby city park.  I pointed out to Jean the problem of introduced species that was on display there. We were harassed by Muscovy Ducks, watched House Sparrows, Starlings, Rock Pigeons, Eurasian Collared Doves, and even chickens were dominating the park.  The only non-introduced species I noted were Boat-tailed grackles and a single Pied-billed Grebe in the water. Still, I felt pretty good about adding ABA species 693 on my way to my goal of 700+ this year.
