Kay and I had a free hour this morning on our family SoCal trip and visited the Bolsa Chica wetlands in Orange County. This is always a treat, with close up views of birds we don’t get to see often in WA. Probably my favorite part of the walk was seeing the fish-eaters crowd into a corner of one of the ponds chasing what appeared to be a school of feed fish. Red-breasted mergansers, eared grebes, horned grebes, Pied-billed grebes, Brown pelicans, Forester’s terns and Snowy egrets all gathered for a feeding frenzy just meters from where we watched from the walking path.
Also sweet was close up looks at Long-billed curlews, Marbled godwits and Willets again very close to the trail at the far end of the path from the boardwalk. I had planned to have fun with my new camera, but for some reason I kept getting a memory full message after just 8 photos on a 16 gigabyte memory card. Go figure. Anyway a day birding with egrets, palm trees and sunshine is a good day.
